My Rules of the Road
Commuting used to be no big deal to me when we lived outside of Philadelphia. You couldn’t get from your house to the Giant 3 miles up the road in less than 20 minutes, so when you whine to me that it takes you 20 minutes to get to work, please don’t expect sympathy. After we moved back to NC, my commute was brutal. Back bedroom to front of the house office. I could go for days without going past the bus stop. I started commuting again a few weeks ago when I made the brilliant decision (totally sincere statement.. do not misconstrue that) to merge my company with another firm. Now most mornings, I drop the girls off at school and hit the highway heading to my big, new office full of smart and talented people. It’s all great and I love it except for one thing. I forgot … read more

Mom’s The Kraken is in the House!!
I love Guest posts… it gives peeps who frequent my blog, but maybe not others, the chance to read some of the kick-ass bloggers that I love. Today is no exception… today I give you The Kraken. I love the fact that she uses (what looks to me) the fricking Loch Ness Monster as her focal point. God knows I feel like that’s how I come across to my family on any given day. Kraken.. to answer your question.. I am ALL Lexington Style BBQ, girl! Without further ado… I give you Mom’s The Kraken! I loved Kristen’s Leap Blog Day entry, Life in a Southern Town, that originally appeared on Dirty Dishes & High Heels, and on fourhensandarooster a few weeks later. It was funny and fed my obsession with Southern customs and traditions. I was especially intrigued by her description of pig pickins’ which is different than a … read more

Apres Anti-Party
I survived the anti-party. And while we had eight girls in the house (one of the nine had to bail last minute) it really wasn’t that bad. People think I’m crazy when I willingly invite a friend over for each girl but really… it’s easier. Then, everyone has a buddy and they stay out of each others hair. Another thing that I’ve discovered is that it always has to be one on one. Or two on two. Never two on one. Always, always it has to be an even number. Mackenzie had prepared me Thursday night that she and her friends would want to go to the mall on Friday as part of their anti-party and I actually thought it would be a good idea. That way the other, younger 4 would have a little “breathing room” without the big girls there and also give the Rooster a bit of … read more

The Anti-Party
I was informed yesterday that Mackenzie would be hosting what can only be termed as an “anti-party”. What’s an anti-party, you ask? It’s the party you throw when you’ve been snubbed from another party. Remember the parties back in elementary school where you invited the whole class or at least all the kids of the appropriate sex? Yeah, that doesn’t happen in middle school. And as we all know, middle school is where all the division starts happening. This person only invites certain people and it doesn’t matter if the kids were all BFFs when they were younger, sometimes you just don’t make the cut. And that hurts. I remember being in middle school when the party invites would go out. You would sit there in (silent) breathless anticipation to get your invite and when it didn’t happen, it hurt. Big time. Sure you would put on your facade that … read more

Life In A Southern Town
I was born and raised in NC and made my first move out of the state at the age of 22. Over the next 15 years, I would live in Chicago, Vail and Philadelphia.. with a couple of moves BACK to NC worked in there for good measure. I resisted living here in NC during my single days, but when you have a family and you live in an area where there is NO family, suddenly “home” looks a little bit sweeter. We packed our bags and our truck for what I hope will be the last time and headed back to the South. There’s a misconception that anyone who lives below the Mason-Dixon line is a slow, back-ass hick. While we certainly have our fair share of those, it’s by no means every single person and the majority of “new” people that I meet are in fact from other areas … read more
