The Difference In How Kids Communicate
Like everyone else, all 3 of my girls are very similar yet very unique in their personalities. I’m struck today about a BIG difference between #1 and #2. Traveling communication. #1 absolutely must be in touch with us the entire time she is away from home. She went on a trip to Vail with the besties in February and I hadn’t left her behind at the airport more than 10 minutes before I got the first text from her. By the time she landed in Atlanta for her connecting flight, we had carried on several conversations by text.. what she was doing, what she was eating, what the airport looked like and so on. Flash forward to the actual trip itself, pretty much without fail, we talked to her every morning before she went skiing, in the afternoon after she was done skiing and then one last call before she … read more
New Year’s Day – New Beginnings All Around
I have never really celebrated New Year’s Eve. I mean, I did in my high school years and a little bit of the college years but that’s it. I was always in the restaurant business which meant that on New Year’s Eve, I was working. And that was okay with me… what better way to spend your night than making money off people who would either not remember the night before or regret the fact that they could? Not celebrating “amateur night” to bank some major coin always seemed okay in my book. My love for New Year’s Day actually came from those years. Since we all worked the night before, my friends and I would plan our celebration the day after by getting the day started with Mimosa’s, bloody’s and a day full of eating amazing food and usually a chili cook-off not to mention “real” Bowl Games. Today’s version … read more

2011 Gingerbread Party
A tradition we started in PA 8 years ago to help the girls pass away the time until Christmas, has grown larger every year. This year was no exception as we welcomed over 20 kids (and a few brave parents) to our house. I love watching how their houses have changed over the years as well as watching the ones that started out with a Gingerbread person a few years ago finally “graduating” to a house. Due to my poor chicken scratch (math) we had more kids than houses this year, so I was particularly proud of the wee hens who gave theirs up so that all the younger kids could have a house. Does a Mama Hen proud Since this is really the Rooster’s gig, I thought it would be cool to shower him with a t-shirt worthy of him. He was even awesome enough to wear it… Typically the … read more

Social Media, Parenting and (Lack of) Common Sense
I was running around Facebook, as I frequently do throughout the day, when I came across a business page running a contest. Nothing odd there, right? Lots of businesses run contests and incentives to increase their traffic and number of “likes”. Except this one was different. This Facebook page was for a medical practice that caters to pediatrics. “So what?” you may say. Here’s what. This is the post from the page: Support your child and their school today by entering them into our ______ CONTEST! To enter, simply post your child’s name, along with the name of their school. The school with the most entries will win $1,000 for their school! The runner up will win $500 for their school! Did you catch that? The page was asking for not only the names of the kids but where they went to school. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the parents were … read more
