What Are You Hiding Behind Your Mask?

who hides behind your mask

It’s been a long while since I participated in BlogHer‘s NaBloPoMo – 5 months to be exact. But, this month’s “Mask” theme caught my eye and I figured that I would end the year the way I started it… by committing to writing here every day. Honestly though, had the theme not intrigued me, I probably would have bypassed it because the last 3 months of the year are insanely busy for me just like everyone else. I don’t always follow the prompts that NaBloPoMo’s community manager, Melissa gives but most of this month’s are really great. For instance, today’s asked what first popped to mind when you read that the theme was “Mask”. Without a doubt my interpretation is that a mask is something we all hide behind. I don’t care who you are or what you say, we all have a mask that we hide behind to some … read more

Getting the Lion’s Share at Food Lion

This post is FULL of news and items!! I’ve got pictures, video AND a give away!! Who’s your favorite blogger now?! Food Lion is one of the three “regular” grocery stores in our area (Note.. I don’t put Whole Foods or Fresh Market in this category) and is known for its lower prices and simple stores. While I’m a big fan of saving money, I am also very particular about where I shop. Food Lion has always had the better prices of the three grocery stores but a lot of their stores have become pretty run down. So much in fact, that I had taken them out of circulation as a regular option when it came to our weekly grocery shop. There is one less than 4 miles from our house but I usually will only run in there when I’m in that area. So I was thrilled when I found out … read more

My Rules of the Road

Commuting used to be no big deal to me when we lived outside of Philadelphia. You couldn’t get from your house to the Giant 3 miles up the road in less than 20 minutes, so when you whine to me that it takes you 20 minutes to get to work, please don’t expect sympathy. After we moved back to NC, my commute was brutal. Back bedroom to front of the house office. I could go for days without going past the bus stop. I started commuting again a few weeks ago when I made the brilliant decision (totally sincere statement.. do not misconstrue that) to merge my company with another firm. Now most mornings, I drop the girls off at school and hit the highway heading to my big, new office full of smart and talented people. It’s all great and I love it except for one thing. I forgot … read more

Life In A Southern Town

I was born and raised in NC and made my first move out of the state at the age of 22. Over the next 15 years, I would live in Chicago, Vail and Philadelphia.. with a couple of moves BACK to NC worked in there for good measure. I resisted living here in NC during my single days, but when you have a family and you live in an area where there is NO family, suddenly “home” looks a little bit sweeter. We packed our bags and our truck for what I hope will be the last time and headed back to the South. There’s a misconception that anyone who lives below the Mason-Dixon line is a slow, back-ass hick. While we certainly have our fair share of those, it’s by no means every single person and the majority of “new” people that I meet are in fact from other areas … read more

Everyone Has a Story…

… You just have to stop and listen. I often tell my kids “you have 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason” but realize that sometimes, I forget those same words.   Sydney, Cassie and I were at the 100th Girl Scout Anniversary celebration where there were HUNDREDS of Girl Scouts, leaders and parents. It was truly an awesome event. I was standing at our Brownie’s booth when I saw the cutest little lady standing there sampling the “Indoor S’mores” that the girls had made. And because I listened to my own “rule”, I was given the chance to hear her amazing story. We started the normal chit-chat and then she told me that she has been a Girl Scout for 47 years. That was impressive but I knew she was much older and when I stopped to do the mental math, I realized that she had to have started scouting … read more
