To My Sweet Girls – You ARE My Sunshines

The power of songs should never be underestimated. Even if they are the simple, little songs we sang to our kids when they were little. And sometimes, especially if they’re the songs from when they were little. From the time she was born until a time that I don’t have a date for, DD #1 always made me sing this song to her at bedtime. “Made me” is a strong statement.. I loved it and it was my favorite part of the day. Because every word of that simple song is true. She stopped asking me to sing it a few years ago and I miss that tender close to our day. Every now and again.. when I feel she’s upset with me or I feel the need to reconnect with her, I will grab her in a bear hug and sing it as loudly and as off key as … read more

Things that I Miss – And You Will Too.

Just a quick update before I revisit this topic… The Powerpuff Girls are coming back!! WOOHOO!!! Well, at least for a feature film, but that’s good enough for this household of Townsville fans! I’m not sure where I was.. perhaps buying a baby shower gift (don’t get too many of those invites anymore) or maybe even a birthday present. But as I was walking thru the aisles of “little” toys and clothes, it suddenly hit me. There are a lot of things that I miss now that my girls are older. For instance… I miss Nick Jr, Boomerang and The Goodnight Show. I miss the Powerpuff Girls. I miss Blues Clues and  I miss Dora (say “Seriously”!). Now I have to endure “regular” Nickelodeon which means iCarly, Wizards of Waverly Place and Victorious. Although in another 5 years, I may miss them, too. (update – I do.. they’re all gone … read more

A Birthday Message to My 14 Year Old Daughter

Dear Mackenzie, Today is your 14th birthday and the only reason that I can write this post is because I know that you never come over to this part of the woods. I can’t believe that 14 years ago you came  into this world and immediately changed everything that I knew to be good and replaced it with something amazing. I know that we are getting to the point of our relationship where things aren’t always great.. You’re trying to figure out your place in the world and I know that pretty soon – that place will be without me. That makes me sad but I know that it’s the way life is. I did it with my parents and they did it with theirs. Every teenager thinks that they are the first person to go thru the crazy turmoil of the teen years but trust me – it’s nothing … read more

It’s Hard to Soar Like an Eagle

mackenzie and donovan mcnabb

… when you’re surrounded by Cats. The Rooster is a die-hard Eagles fan. I honestly think the man bleeds green. He was in his element when we lived outside of Philadelphia. He was surrounded by all things Eagles. All things Philly Sports, really. When we made the move to NC, the only thing that the Rooster asked for was the NFL Sunday ticket so he could continue watching his beloved Eagles and I was okay with that. Every month when that Directv bill comes, it hurts just a little but I know how important it is to him so I sigh and I pay it. Our time up there was during the reign of Donovan McNabb. He of the Chunky Soup, was always a class act even if he couldn’t bring home the big win. I swear to you, the highlight of the Rooster’s life were the two times that he managed … read more

Golf Like a Girl, Whine Like a Baby

I had the chance to hit the golf course for the first time in 20 years last week. It was a partial fundraiser for one of my networking groups – $20 for an hour and half group lesson. We learned some basic fundamentals and then were allowed to whack balls from the driving range the rest of the time. Considering I haven’t done anything more than PuttPutt in 20 years, I was pretty pleased with my performance. Read: I managed to make contact with the ball more often than not. It was a fun afternoon and was made even better by having the bestie, my friend and business partner as well as my very own Little Mama out there. I had a great time but good God was I sore for the next few days. Who knew that driving balls down the range could use so many butt muscles. As … read more
