The Great Four Hens and a Rooster Road Trip – 2014

Let’s Go on an RV Road Trip!

We (er..ย I) have decided that next summer, we are going to take the mother-lode of vacations and dofour hens on a road trip a 3 week RV road trip in the southwest. Yes, you read that correctly.. all 5 of us, for 3 weeks, living in an RV.

In about 380 days, I could possibly come back to this post and say without further ado “Yep. Kristen, you were certifiable, 100%, out of your mind crazy”. OR! I could come back here and tell you guys it was better than anything that I could have ever hoped for. I’m hoping it’s that and not that I was crazy.

I have a sneaking suspicion it will be a combination.

I’ve wanted to do this for a few years and like a lot of things, I let it fester in my head without acting on it. But then I realized that next year is probably the last year that we can do it. Mackenzie will be 16 next fall, so (with any luck) she’ll be working in the summer, hanging out with her friends and will have no time for a long vacation. After a little cajoling, I got Steve on board and truth be told, I think he and the girls are looking forward to it.

Bear in mind… we have NEVER done an RV trip. Honestly, the most time we’ve spent together on vacation is a couple of spring breaks and a Thanksgiving cruise. But really… I’m sure we’ll survive just fine and someday, the girls will look back on it and remember it. For better or worse.

And the best part? I’m going to chronicle the whole thing right here.

From this post telling you about it.. to planning out the stops along the way.. to cooking on the road and in small quarters.. to how to do it on a budget – everything. Anyone with tweens and teens will tell you that finding interesting things that they want to do with you is challenging.ย I’ll be mixing it up a bit and doing a few more videos along with the “written” posts.

I’ll answer burning questions like..

So what’s next? Well, next I’m going to dissect the process of renting an RV. What sites I use to research.. how big of a camper do you really need and explaining to the kids that no, you do NOT get your own bathroom. Then I’ll start evaluating routes… do we fly west, rent the RV and then drive? Or do we rent the RV here and drive northwest? Hhmmm….

If you’ve got experience with these kind of trips, I welcome your advice! Oh and if you or anyone you know is interested in sponsoring the Four Hens road trip (#4HOTR), let me know. I guarantee it will be worth the investment!

  1. Lots of questions…lots of questions…

This trip sounds like a lot of fun! I always tell my hubby, when the kids are out of the house, we will sell it and buy and RV. Then, we will spend the rest of our days on the road.

Never thought about setting up camp in the parking lot of Walmart though.

    • YES!!! I’ve told the Rooster the same thing! Wonder how long it would take before that got old? At least it gives us all the chance to pull up in front of our kids house and stay a while ๐Ÿ˜‰ Can you imagine?! Thank you and I will do the same!

  2. You’re going to have such a blast. Jame’s parents have an AWESOME RV so we typically go “camping” a few times a year. Seriously that bad boy has two bathrooms (one with a shower) a full kitchen, and big screen tv. Basically all the comforts of home ๐Ÿ˜‰

KOA’s are great sites to camp at, so I think you’ll love it. I think you should definetly take some video footage for the blog. I have a feeling that photos just won’t do this trip justice ๐Ÿ˜‰ Looking forward to the answers of your titillating questions.

  3. Oh no! I just let my comment on Triberr and then I realized this was where you were taking comments! Ugh! I’m going to put in here what I remember from what I wrote since I cannot see the entire thing!

“I’m not sure if you’ve ever seen King of Queens before (I absolutely love that show) but I am sitting here reading your blog with the TV on in the background and the episode was on when Doug wanted his and Carrie’s vacation to be in an RV road trip out west! How funny that I was reading this post and that episode was on. I live in the Southwest now here in Avondale, Arizona and it is really beautiful here so I could only imagine what you might see on your trip depending on where you will be traveling. Sounds like a nice memory to create with your family. I hope it turns out to be even better than you imagined it would be! Thanks for linking up with us on the Mommy Monday Blog Hop! Have an extraordinary week! <3

    • I’m pretty confident that it will end up exactly like that or like the Robin Williams movie. But I’m also confident that it will be a favorite memory of theirs. It might take 20 years, but it WILL be a favorite.

  4. My hubby has recently begun suggesting that we should do this with our girls. They are younger – 10, 8, & 5 and I’m sure he would never take an entire 3 weeks off work. I’m not sure about it. All 5 of us in close quarters, 1 bathroom, etc. doesn’t really sound fun to me. Can’t wait to hear how it goes for you!

  5. Never done it but it’s one of my life goals! I think it sounds fun. My good friends did it cross country a few years ago, before they had their baby, and they blogged the whole thing. Admittedly, their blog is nothing like yours and they didn’t have many readers – (maybe just me) but I think they’ll treasure it forever.
Can’t wait to hear all about it! And my friends did talk about the whole bathroom..situation. Interesting!

  6. This is one of my “dream” vacations! I would love to see more to the US – and I would definitely love to do it in an RV. Can’t wait to read more!

  7. I’m from Roswell, NM. Don’t come here. I mean, unless aliens are your thing. There’s NOTHING here otherwise. I suggest taking historic Route 66. Way more cool stuff to see on that route. It’ll take you through Santa Fe and you definitely don’t want to miss that!

However, I DO recommend visiting Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Giant cave for the win! In which case you will come through Roswell, but you can drive from Santa Fe/Albuquerque to Carlsbad in just a little over half a day. Also there’s a pool and two water slides that free whhe you stay at the campground.

    • Thanks, Stephanie!! For the visit AND the advice. Roswell is tentatively on our schedule but so is Carlsbad and White Sands! I’m sure our itinerary will change quite a bit between now and then.. it’ll be interesting to see what we end up with as a final route.
